I have 8GB RAM. i7 processor. It's a new system. I have tried Wubi. It seems to install, but then does not allow me to boot. I have also tried the CD/DVD of Ubuntu, Fedora, and Debian. They all seem to hang, or freeze, while booting up. I was able to successfully install a VM of Ubuntu, using Virtual Box. The pre-installed Windows 7 64 bit runs fine. I want to do a duel boot. I have installed LINUX on my previous Dell, and Sony laptops. I also installed it on a Mac Pro. I have not had this problem before.

May it be possible that this is a laptop with Nvidia Optimus technology? That still makes problems, since Nvidia (currently) doesn't support that on Linux. You have to use the free nouveau drivers in that case together with Bumblebee, if I remember correctly.

Hi everyone, I am the author of the Simple Hacks & Reviews blog and obviously a happy Dell XPS owner.

To install every distribution, not only Ubuntu, successfully you have to always boot with the disc.

Try this:

1) Update your BIOS to the latest version, highly recommended. Download it from the Dell support site. I think the latest version now is the A18 A17.
2) Reboot and watch your BIOS get flashed
3) Reboot again and press F2 to go to the setup screen
4) Enable the boot menu (F12)
5) Reboot again and insert your Ubuntu disk, or a usb stick prepared with unetbootin
6) When booting press F12 to go to the boot options
7) Choose now your boot medium
8) Try Ubuntu and/or install it
9) That's it

There is no possibility that you can't boot with other medium except hard disks. It doesn't matter either if the model you have supports Optimus or not, this is a different story. Mine doesn't have by the way.

That was the problem. Once I updated the BIOS, I was able to instal Debian. Thanks so much!
