I have an IBM T20 notebook with a S3 Savage IX/8 video card. This card has 8MB of ram (not much nowadays) and 3D accelleration support. I use Debian 3.0, XFree86 4.1.0.1 and I cannot get OpenGL to do hardware rendering. I've tried glxinfo and it says I have direct rendering, but the fps of glxgears at full screen (1024x768x24) is only about 10. Here's a bit of my XF86Config-4:
As it turns out, the savage driver doesn't have 3d accel for IX/MX cards. The latest version has it for the next model up :| Not impressed with VIA's support here.
Yeah, this sucks. Go search about which laptop is good for Linux and you'll always see the T-series there. But you can't play any games at all because of DRI - 3D accel in Linux for Savage /IX. Then, too, suspend sucks, too. Good thing I have an XP partition so that if I plan on leaving the thing on I can just close the lid.
Apparently, the DRI support for the Savage IX on Linux can be obtained from dri.sf.net
However, the Savage IX requires more than 9MB of Videoram in order to enable DRI. This is due to static memory paging (as I have been told) which is part of the kernel. I was told that there are people working on the problem, but it's a big change.
