Can't get 1024x768 with intel 855 chipset

I got a Gateway M305 laptop that has a built-in Intel 855 videocard (running SuSE 10.1). I know the blasted thing can display at 1024x768--for Windoze will--BUT LINUX WON'T.

I've done everything I can think of, switched to init 3, messed with suse's sax and modified the xorg.conf file. I even found this 855resolution rpm that supposedly patches the vbios, and guess what won't happen? (1024x768, you got it)

So, anyone good a good idea?

Did you try putting 'Driver "vesa"' in xorg.conf, to begin with? That will never give you 3D acceleration, but it will give you normal resolution. After that you can experiment with i810, i830 and similar drivers (having easy way to boot X after any try and run browser comfortably).. Post xorg.conf, by the way.

anubis26 01-07-2007 01:43 PM

A program called 915resolution for the 8xx/9xx chipsets might help. Here is a link to a guide, but it concerns widescreen, so make sure that you type in 1024x768 rather than 1280x768 .

well...

Interesting idea with the vesa driver. I did have yet to try in on this machine. I say this machine because it is not mine, tis my girlfriend's (she had windows explode on her, decided it was time for a change), so I can't post the xorg.conf right now.

Thanks for the reply, btw. Part of my linux/manhood is on the line here.

855resolution actually did it!

Just wanted to post an update here. 855resolution finally did the trick (after going to init 3, running it there, then removing the modelines for other resolutions) and I now have 1024x768...sort of

Here is the thing, xorg is actually displaying at proper resolution, however KDE thinks this is 1024x600. I haven't googled anything yet, but does anyone know how to force a rez on KDE at startup?

Aqui, lo esta; my xorg.conf:

Forgot to mention that the above was with 1024x600 only on, with 1024x768 as the only resolution xorg still only displays at 800x600 for some strange reason.

tea of evil 02-04-2007 10:42 PM

now more annoyed than ever!

I still am lost.

After that breif moment of giving me 1024x600 resolution, I haven't made any progress. In fact, I can't even replicate getting 1024x600 back! I've tried messing with 855resolution and removing modelines from xorg.conf (which is pretty much the same as posted above; commented resolutions different but everything else the same). I can't get this to work and it is seriously annoying to be stuck with such little desktop space.

Here is what 855resolution gives me:

855resolution version 0.4, by Alain Poirier

Chipset: 855GM (id=0x35808086)
VBIOS type: 1
VBIOS Version: 2880

Mode 30 : 640x480, 8 bits/pixel
Mode 32 : 800x600, 8 bits/pixel
Mode 34 : 1024x768, 8 bits/pixel
Mode 36 : 1024x600, 8 bits/pixel
Mode 38 : 1280x1024, 8 bits/pixel
Mode 3a : 1600x1200, 8 bits/pixel
Mode 3c : 1920x1440, 8 bits/pixel
Mode 41 : 640x480, 16 bits/pixel
Mode 43 : 800x600, 16 bits/pixel
Mode 45 : 1024x768, 16 bits/pixel
Mode 47 : 1024x600, 16 bits/pixel
Mode 49 : 1280x1024, 16 bits/pixel
Mode 4b : 1600x1200, 16 bits/pixel
Mode 4d : 1920x1440, 16 bits/pixel
Mode 50 : 640x480, 32 bits/pixel
Mode 52 : 800x600, 32 bits/pixel
Mode 54 : 1024x768, 32 bits/pixel
Mode 56 : 1024x600, 32 bits/pixel
Mode 58 : 1280x1024, 32 bits/pixel
Mode 5a : 1600x1200, 32 bits/pixel
Mode 5c : 1920x1440, 32 bits/pixel

And that is the default, before I start messing with things. I've even tried replacing everything with 1024x768, which causes xorg to give various interesting crashes.

Can anyone help me? There has got to be some way to get this working right.

Frustration mounting

Just now, I even tried the drivers from Xig.com, and they didn't even work! [sigh] I'm ready to toss this laptop in the scrap bin and find one that works. I just really wish that the Intel driver would do what it is supposed to!

Here is my latest xorg.conf, if that helps anyone:
