Can't configure Synaptics Touchpad on Compaq NC4000

Somebody please help a total newbie!

I've just converted my Compaq nc4000 to Fedora, finally took the plunge! My problem is simply that I don't know how to go about configuring things so that I can actually control touchpad behaviour. At the moment "Tapping" behaviour is on by default and if there is anything I hate more an a laptop I've yet to find it!

I loaded GSynaptics but can't find the appropriate line to edit in the conf file, GSynaptics sends me error :-

"You have to set 'SHMConfig' 'true' in xorg.conf or XF86Config to use GSynaptics" but I can't find SHMConfig in either of those files

I really would appreciate some help here

Hi, and welcome to LQ.

If the SHMConfig line is not in the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf you can just add it.

look for a section similar to below, and add the bit in red:
Code:
Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Synaptics"
    Driver "synaptics"
    Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
    Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
    Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"
    Option "ShmConfig" "true"
    Option "MaxTapTime" "0"
    Option "TapButton1" "0"
    Option "TapButton2" "0"
    Option "TapButton3" "0"
        #Option "HorizScrollDelta" "0"
EndSection
now restart the X server...and cross fingers

EDIT:
note the line
Code:
Option "MaxTapTime" "0"
this will disable tapping without the need for GSynaptics
