Question Booting problems

Hi to all,
I have dual booting with XP and Ubuntu.
At the beginning the Grub(I think so)shows a list of options to select an OS.Though there are only 2 OS but many options are displayed I used to select Ubuntu or XP. It all worked fine but my friend who was new to this setup chose Windows Vista loader by mistake. I have no Vista in my netbook. Then it further went ahead to show options for backup which we declined. The problem started, the systems when switched on opens show to select F2 or F8 for system settings and repeat this process continuosly. Now the OS options are not displayed but b4 said process continuously. I tried to backup but it does not work,I tried to reinstall but doesnot work. I have External CD drive, the system recognise CD drive but not booting from CD and the b4 said process repeats. I have set external CD drive as first preference for booting.
The OS is pendrive ubuntu linux and it occupies little space.
So this is bizarre for a newbie like me. I installed pendrive linux to migrate from windows.i FOUND Linux ok.
can somebody suggest a solution
thank u
rahul

I can't understand everything what you say especially "b4". The bottom line is you probably blow sky high your mbr. Read google about restoring Grub.
As far as I know from experience even disk cloning leaves you with not working boot loader, at least lilo after dd command.

b4 means before here. the systems starts and it shows to press F 12 OR F8 buttons for settings and this process repeats continuously.
thank you
