Boot floppy image for Fedora Core 2
 

Hi everyone,

I have a notebook and I want to install Fedora Core 2 on it. But the problem is that it has only a Floppy Drive. I have setup an FTP server and it Works fine I can use the Fedora core 1 Floppies to boot the Laptop and connect to ftp and start pulling the netstage2.img file but then It tells me that the Tree does not match my boot medium. Then All I can do is restart connecting to the FTP share.

I have looked on the DVD but there are no floppy images anymore like on Fedora 1. I cannot boot from USB device as the notebook does not support this.

Just a thought. Can I somehow change the core 1 Floppy to work with core 2?
Or does someone know where I can Find the Core 2 floppies?

There's two boot images that you can burn to a CD or USB drive, respectively, on the Install DVD. You're mileage may vary, I'm having trouble getting the DVD to boot off my machine.

It didnt work for me even though I was sure it would, it was taking to much space. More than 1.4 mb, but maybe you'll have better luck!

Hello All I have managed to get the Install to work.
Fedora core does not have boot floppies because it is too big to fit onto a floppy apparently.... any way

I read this in a forum somewhere but I cannot find it any more so I am writing down what I can remember here.

Its quite a round about way but it worked.

First:
I installed fedora core 1 minimal on the laptop from network because that has boot floppies that come with it.

Second:
Copy the iso linux folder from the dvd of the fedora core 2 via network share (ftp works fine) to the /boot partition into a folder called iso (or somthing simpilar but keep it simple).

Third:
Edit the grub.conf in /boot to start the isolinux that has just been copied to the /boot partition. (just copy the entry thats there and edit it to point to the isolinuz kernel on the iso directory)

Then when you reboot select the new entry and TADA you can now install fedora core 2 on a laptop with only a floppy drive.

You can kill everything from the minimal fedora core1 install because the installation routine for fedora core 2 runs from ramdisk.

Now your notebook should be up and running and good as new :)

ya i have thew same problem.
and why would it matter how big the boot disk is? the windoz XP install boot disks need 6 floppies.

Yeah why don't they spawn it in more then one floppy

I downloaded all the 4 Fedora Core 2 CD ISO and burned them before I finally learn that I downloaded them and burned them for nothing. The computer I wish to use to run Fedora Core 2 can't boot with a bootable CD and doesn't have any USB ports.

And please don't ask me to download Fedora Core 1, burn it, install it and then connect it to an ftp server... I have a quote that I like :

So, what the hell the Fedora Core 2 boot media contains that the Fedora Core 1 doesn't contains? Are you sure that all this stuff is not optional for people like me?

All I have here is :

- One Red Hat 7.2 setup floppy
- The 2 CD needed to install Red Hat 7.2
- The 4 CD needed to install Fedora Core 2
- A Pentium Pro 180 MHz with 64 MB of EDO RAM, a floppy drive, a CD-ROM drive, a 3 GB hard drive, a 1.5 GB hard drive and a 56 k modem.
- The computer of my friend which I can use to browser the web, download SOME stuff and write SOME CD.
- All the stuff I need to reinstall Windows 98 on my Pentium Pro 180 MHz.


So what can/should I do to have a RECENT (NOT Red Hat 7.x) Linux distribution running on my computer (I thought that the latest Red Hat free distribution "Fedora Core 2" could be nice, I used Red Hat 7.2 at home and at work for the last 2 years. I can download an other CD-ROM set, but this set MUST be the good one...

Upgrade to FC2 from FC1 or RH7

Yes I think that it is possible to upgrade from FC1 to FC2.

Maybe I seem to be a Linux expert.... but in fact, I'm not really. I used Red Hat 7.2 for a while so I know SOME things about Linux and Red Hat, but I'm far to be the king in the matter. :D

I wish someone else here could tell us how to upgrade from an older distrib, "Red Hat 7.2" in my case or "Fedora Core 1" in your case, to "Fedora Core 2" with the CDs content copied on a partition on an hard drive, without using CDs or USB devices to boot.

do you think its worth it to hunt down a box that CAN boot from CD, install it on that, then pop the hardrive in the other one?

yes u can obivously upgrade from FC1/RH9 to FC2..
that is very simply also..

right, but i know with windows (ya i know, we all hate windows) upgrading isn't as solid as a fresh install. is this the case with Linux? (as you can see by my rank, i'm a noob)

i have never tried it..but i think it can't be bad..although it is a safe praitce to keep ur data separate always so that it never messes with any OS bugs..

I cant even boot from cd in fedora core 1. Weird. Please advice

[edit] : sorry. I tried using my old mandrake cd, the autorun was ok. i also tried using xp cd, it booted fine. I also did all the checksumming, burned my iso images at 4x, hardware check and cd check. Nothing works...
