Black screen instaallin GeeXbox

Hello all, I'm new here and last time I installed Linux was SCO, so long time ago...but need your help, please:
I'm trying to run GeeXBox 1.2.3 in my old Laptop, a Dell Latitude cpi d233st (as far as I found in web documentation, it has a video controller NeoMagic 2160 and an audio controller Crystal 4237B, details perhaps relevant for the issue) . It's an old PentiumII, but one that I want to use as Media center for my kids when we are in a car, and after read lot of info, I understood that distro was the appropriate one, isn't it?
Problem details:
- Starting directly from the CD GeeXbox,GeeXbox HTDV or trying to Install, always gets hang with an screen showing "Open media center" logo and "loading" below, but the first quarter of the screen on the top is grey and empty.
- If I edit vmlinuz options before and take out the quiet I get hang with an screen showing "Open media center" logo and "loading" below, but the first quarter of the screen on the top is grey and empty, but in such grey zone of the screen I can see some commands, being the last one: PCI 0000:00:00.0: Limiting direct PCI/PCI transfers. I really cannot see if that is the last executed command or just the last one that is able to display. This is perhaps like is happening to http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...nsfers-491514/
- If I edit vmlinuz options before and change splash to normal and I take out the quiet mode, I see lot of commands but suddenly I get a black screen, just before the process opens the CD door.
- The only way to reach the Install options in the screen is to take out the vga=768 from the vmlinux. So, looks like everything is installed ok, but when success installe, I cannot boot because I get the black screen as usual.
- If I try to start in debug mode (I'm not familiar with the options) at least I see the last lines, where I see one error, but not sure if related to the black screen:

### Configuring MPlayer's menu ###
### Configuring MPlayer's audio settings ###
sed: /proc/asound/pcm: No such file or directory
grep: /proc/asound/pcm: No such file or directory
sed: /proc/asound/pcm: No such file or directory
Invalid card number
### Configuring MPlayer's video settings ###
### Starting MPlayer's utilities ###
#
Then, I type return and I'm again in the black screen

I tested lot of things (several framebuffer resolution,..)but I'm totally stuck.
Any help, advice or clue about what to test is welcome, please.
Thank you
