Black Screen following Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 install - What Next?

In short my 120GB Acer Aspire One was running Ubuntu Netbook Remix. I 'upgraded' to 9.10 UNR and all I get is a Black screen.

Now I have the older 9.04 version on a USB stick, but need to know how to have the machine boot this so I can re-install it. The default is the hard disk at present. Help desperately needed as the item is a promised present having agreed to sell this item to a friend.

What can I do next ?

Many Thanks,

Barrie (Torquay UK)

Sorry to answer this post with a question, but I really do need more information:

After the upgrade, does the computer still Post? i.e., does it still get into boot loader at least, and try and start Ubuntu, then fails and loads a black screen?

Regardless, if you want to reinstall using that usb thumb drive of yours, then press [F12] key at boot time and choose:

USB Floppy Drive

option to start installation - this assuming you have set up flash drive to boot correctly with UNR 9.04

Let us know what's up . . .

If only I got to the boot screen, then of course I could boot from the USB key with Ubuntu 9.04 on it. But the screen is entirely black / blank and the AAO 1 is set to boot from the hard disk.

The hard disk appears to be doing nothing at all.

Worse still, I had previously upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 without problem.

I sought to wipe the disc clean and installed 9.04 from the key and then upgrade to 9.10 with a clean install as the item has been purchased from me as a present for someone for Christmas.

Is the netbook really bricked ?

Can anyone really help ?

haha, this is no longer a linux problem but a laptop bios/hardware problem (my guess is bios). Notheless, this problem is not uncommon and one probable solution can be found Here! Let us know what happens.

Boot the AAO with the USB stick plugged in and just after the POST cycle use the F2 key to gain access to the BIOS. Once you are in the BIOS you can change the boot order of the drives. If the F2 key doesn't work then research what is the appropriate key for your AAO.

Chuck, he doesn't POST so f2 won't work.

There is a AAO BIOS recover process documented in many places. Maybe that will help bring the laptop back to life?
