Best Linux Distribution for Sony Vaio
Hey,
I was trying to install Red Hat on my Sony Vaio, but now that I see there are many different distributions, I am wondering if there is a distribution that is better for Laptops than Red Hat. It has to be able to use the touch mouse pad, and let me use the ethernet port for internet. And a nice interface. Any suggestions? Or is Red Hat the best one for LapTops? |
I've got a Sony Vaio PCG-GRZ630. I've tried almost all the popular distros and never had any major problems with any of them. I currently use Slackware and am extremely happy with it. I even managed to get the LCD brighteness to be adjusted. If you are new to linux, you can try RedHat or SuSE to get started, otherwise my personal preference is Slackware.

Agreed. Mandrake, Suse or Fedora should all run just fine. I installed Ubuntu on my laptop and have been very happy with it.

I have a VGN-S260 and I'm really happy with Slackware on it too :) If you don't fear a little bit of manual configuration go for it...

Sony Vaio
Running Slackware here on a GRZ530.
The ACPI allows the CPU and fan speed to change when things get really warm in a kernel compile operation. The display is beautiful and the system is quick. Tried RedHat 8, 9 and Fedora Core1, but they had a slower feel than Slackware. |
Been using Slackware 10.0 on a PCG-K215M
still a bit green when it comes to linux, but everything i have tried has work, tho i have not yet tested the USB yet, its on the list of things i have left to do. Been using it for about 3 months, and no real big issues with it |
Try Linspire
I had problems (still do) with some Linux versions, such as Suse, on my Toshiba laptop. Oddly enough, the only one that loaded with absolutely no problems was Linspire, aka Lindows, the Linux version packaged with the sub $200 pc's that Wal-Mart sells online.
It's the only one that recognized an accepted every piece of hardware I have on my computer. Worst thing is, I paid all of $2 for the disk as compared to $30 for Suse and Suse doesn't work! |
