BT is intended for the most technical users. Consider a more user friendly disto. Fedora, OpenSuse or Ubuntu. Even slackware and Vector or Gentoo are good choices.

Why do you want to use BT anyway?

I take it you are NOT aware that EVERY distro can do what BT dose

bt only makes it easier for YOU to face a judge in that up and coming "criminal computer trespass" case you might be facing

After the OP got your advices, can we now go back on topic please?

Bartster, please be more specific, we need a better description of your actual problem:
1. Which graphics hardware is in that laptop?
2. Are you able to switch to a different virtual terminal (using Ctrl+Alt+F2)?
3. Do you probably have a second machine, so that you can try to connect with SSH to your laptop and read the logs (/var/log/Xorg.0.log)?
4. As I guess (I don't know Lili USB) you have created a live-USB install. Do you have to the possibility to make a "normal" install and see if the error persists?

Linux provides several consoles (called virtual terminals, in short VT), usually 6 are activated by default. You can switch between them using Alt+F1..F6. If you have started the X server you have to use Ctrl+Alt+F1..F6 to switch to them, you can use Alt+F7 to switch back to the graphical mode (this seems to be different in newer Fedora versions).
So, after you launched the startx command, are you able to switch to one of those VTs? This would help to have a look at the logs.

This may help us to troubleshoot your system. But try the part with the virtual terminals first. If that works we don't need this second approach.

OK, then we need to use the second approach. For this we need to run a SSH server on the Backtrack system and a SSH client on your second machine. If you have only Windows on the second machine you can use Putty for that, if you have Linux on that system a terminal/VT will be sufficient.

So, let's start with this:
1. Boot the Backtrack system.
2. Note down the IP address of that system (using ifconfig)
3. Start the SSH server
Code:
sudo service ssh start
4. Launch the X server.

Now we are trying to connect from your second system, either with Putty (put the IP into the right field and connect as root) or, if you run Linux on the second machine, with
Code:
ssh root@IPADDRESS
You have of course to substitute IPADDRESS with the address you noted in step 2. If you can connect to the first machine have a look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log and look for errors in there (or post the file here as attachment).

If you don't make an install to the harddisk, aren't able to switch to a VT and are not able to SSH into the machine then there is no way to have a look at the logs.
What actually is the exact problem with connecting via SHH?

How can you use the exploitation tools if you can't get it to boot? This is why LQ ought to limit Backtrack questions.

I really get annoyed by the biased answers from some members when it involves Auditing.
So what if he is some script kiddie playing with BT? I personally enjoy auditing and that is what got me into Linux way back in 1998 using Slackware.

BT is by far the best Auditing distro I have ever used. If you don't have a good answer don't answer at all. Keep your criticism to yourself.

Gentoo and Slackware over BT? Have you even used BT? I guess not. Lets not give false answers. BT is designed for Auditing with many patches for wireless etc to make things work optimally specific for auditing. Also its a hell lot easier to install over Gentoo or even Slackware. So in my opinion BT is more noob friendly then either of those distros.

I have the skills to install it an use it and to be able to craft a web search to find any issues.

I have used BT and it's exploitation tools just as a thing to do not as a normal daily task. I don't have any legitimate task for it's tools. Many of the tasks could result in doing illegal tasks. I don't actually trust BT. The hackers that made it are way out of my class. I can use tools to monitor it and have found some oddities that make me wonder if it is safe to use. There may only be 2000 people worldwide that could give a proper answer to the quality of that distro. Some of the creators of that are simply the best hackers.

All that stuff can be replicated in a normal distro.

My point is more of honest help. If my son wanted to use Backtrack, I'd expect him him to know what he is doing instead of asking me all day long. I'd expect him to know how to install any distro and use tools. I don't mind helping out a bit but what can you do if you can't get the thing to boot? What is the next question? Is there any honest person that needs backtrack? Few maybe.
