I have a question that I hope someone can answer. I've tried many Linux distributions already and the pattern that I seem to be seeing is that for the video driver, Linux is deciding to load the generic Vesa driver. For me, I'm currently using Fedora Core 2 and the driver here makes text viewable but not clear. Its kinda fuzzy and hard to read. I know that when I had Windows XP on my laptop, the text was fuzzy as well up until I installed the video driver that came with my laptop. Once I installed the right driver, the text was clear and when I move windows across the desktop, I don't see a lag effect (like remnants of the window as it drags).
With the Vesa driver I see the lag effect and the text is not quite clear. Being that on Windows XP I solved the problem by installing the right driver, is there a way for me to install the driver that came with my laptop on Linux? Any suggestion is greatly appreciated. If I can't install the driver that came with my laptop, I want to know if there's a way to fine tune the driver that I do have to get it to work. I have already tried xf86config and it improved the video driver but only slightly. Ideally I'd like to have everything be displayed to near crystal clarity. Any advice or experience would be great. Thanks!
ive got the same machine, same problem (but im running debian) would the fact that the graphcs are integrated (i think thats waht i want to say) have anything to do with the fuzzy display
heres the output of
/bin/lspci
this is all i can find taht would have somethign to do with the video adapter
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8378 [S3 UniChrome] Integrated Video (rev 01)
The video card is VIA Technologies just like he said in the previous post. I have found out what the problem might be. It's because the driver that I'm using is Vesa which makes it so that all monitors can use it. Unfortunately the side effect of that is that the words will be fuzzy. I guess there's not much that can be done to fix it.
The driver that Averatec users should be running is one from Unichrome but Unichrome has yet to support the 3200 model of Averatec laptops. So if you try to run Unichrome, you'll just get a black screen. It kinda sucks in that way but there's nothing you can do but wait unitl the driver supports Averatec 3200.
Going off the same topic here, I've been getting a prompt every once in a while which states that my x and y settings are not set. It suggests that if I were to set these settings, text can be displayed with further clarity. I don't know what values I should be placing for the x and y but if anyone else knows that would be of tremendous help. Thanks!
OK, I've read through the converstion you all have been having. I use Arch Linux, and am trying to use Gnome and Xorg. I also have an Averatec 3200 Series, and don't know which driver in the xorgconfig program to choose. Any help?
