Have you tried a different set of headphones?

Make sure the plug is fully seated into the jack and the headphones are an appropriate impedance (should eb in the manual/specs).

This sounds like a hardware issue. This is a frequent occurance in all sorts of electronics with headphones. The plug or jack aren't quite the right size for a full disconnect of the internal switch. When both the jack adn plug have marginal clearances the problem is even worse. In the case of electronics that detect a voltage change when phones are plugged in to disable speakers, often a mismatch in headphone impedance will produce this problem.

I have a z560 as well, but am using Debian Squeeze. I needed to upgrade to the 2.6.38 kernel in backports before the speaker mute when the headphone jack is in use worked. Squeeze came with 2.6.32 which has an older alsa driver. Since the alsa software in Squeeze is also older than the driver included in my updated 2.6.38 kernel, I also need to insert into /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf the lines:

options snd-hda-intel model=ideapad

My touchpad also needed some extra loving care on 2.6.32 in order to activate the tapping function as that's newer hardware than the synaptic driver in Squeeze supports, but the upgraded kernel helped again by enabling some more choices in the gnome and kde touchpad GUI tools as well.

did you try changing the settings on your computer, normally when you put the headphones, the sound will come out of both the speakers and the headphones if you have not checked the headphone jack sense on the sound settings, so try that out see how it goes!you could go to
Quote:
system>preferences>sound
, check the settings out and see what you'll need to change,

but i would recommend that you try double-clicking on the sound icon on your task bar on the desktop, and then maybe check out for switches or sth, and then check the headphone jack sense option
....i hope it helps..
