ATI M7 3d acceeration issues, Gatos drivers?

I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 w/ a 64mb ATI M7 videocard. This videocard is supported in X 4.3 w/ full 3d acceleration. After trying both Redhat 9 and Mandrake 9.1, 3d accelerations works fine for a few days and then after a few system updates and bugfixes as mandated by Mandrake or Redhat, 3d acceleration is choppy and so is video. Where do I look to troubleshoot this? Changing drivers and screen resolution doesn't help. Doesn anybody know if the Gatos drivers will help? Anybody have this video card working?

Fixed it w/ duct tape and chewing gum

That X log doesn't look so good in some places but I digress... Turning the interval down for checking the battery level in KDE fixed everything. However, I have to wait for updates every 30 seconds on my battery level and there SHOULD be a way around this so I can have more frequent updates on my battery level and 3d acceleration.
Any ideas?
