Aspire one hangs on boot

Hey all.

I have a problem with my Acer Aspire One with Linpus. When ever I boot it up after
having charged the battery, it hangs on boot. I goes throught POST but stop on the screen before the desktop comes up.

Acer have looked at this problem without coming back to me with anything constructive.

I have seen problem on other forums without it being resolved. Not very exp. with linux.

PS: this is not the same problem as in http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...arting-761551/ as mine shows the screen and all. Heard somthing about it being resolvable by editing something in the boot string.

Ant help would be greatly appriciated.

Alex aka "fish"

Edit: Things I have tried
1, call Acer and install new BIOS update
2, Update everything
3, send it in for repair..

If Acer can't fix it, I don't think that we have much chance  Thanks for trusting us this much ;) I assume it's no longer under warranty, else I would request a swap.

Does that screen say anything? Or is it just black? And do you manage to get it right after that (e.g. after another reboot)?

Can you tell us what you need to add to the 'boot string'; next we can try to help you to add it.

1st question. It hangs on the blue aspire one screen (see picture). It still hangs after a reboot. Often I need to reboot many times before it finaly works again. (often takes over half an hours of tries)

2nd question: Not really. Just someone said I could run a string to show if there is a hang or problem with any service or such. hwsetup -v or something like that?...

PS: Acer is full of crap... They fixed our company projector 3 times before it worked. And they know nothing, nothing at all, about their OS Linpus.

This will sound weird, but after some Googling about your problem, it seems you are not alone in your problem; there are lots of Aspire owners having boot problems.

The weird part: use an eraser to remove static charge from the RAM!?! The rubber kind. Read this thread and see if it might apply to your situation: http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-2...-does-not-boot

Again, weird, but weirder things have been known to happen.

Keep us posted.

I just might try it. Even if the aspire one is a little piece of hell to take apart to get to the ram...

I no longer have Linpus installed on my AAO 110. I think that the picture shows the grub screen (my AAO does no longer show it after I installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix); does anything happen when you press <esc> ? You might get a menu; or maybe an error message?

Did you ever try to re-install the operating system from the recovery disk? It might be worth the try, even if Acer might have done that already because that way you're sure that it is done.
If the problem persists, I think that you have a hardware issue at hand and I think that it's the SSD.

hwsetup sounds more like a linux command and I don't think is applicable to the boot string

Hey.
No keys work during the hang. Total freeze. I used to use the recovery when it happend, but it is every time I charge...
It is not really my laptop, it`s my girlfriends, and she likes the Linpus OS.... Might not be able to reply over the weekend btw.

When you manage to boot, can you make a copy of /boot/grub/menu.lst and post it here (please leave all lines starting with a # out). We might be able to advise on some modifications that might show what the system is doing.

fishsticksboy 10-19-2009 10:08 AM

I will do that. Hard to follow up when I don`t have internet at home.

Edit: Tried flashing the BIOS to newest ver. Still no luck with the problem.

fishsticksboy 10-22-2009 03:12 PM

I have not been able to locate /boot(grub/menu.lst
It does not appear to be in the folder. (yes, I`m viewing hidden files)

I'm using an Acer Aspire One(AOA110)
I've installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix and that works for me. Linpus Linux is bad! Although the Acer version is more usable than the generic version. Another option is Moblin. Except that it doesn't support 3G yet.
I gave up trying to get Linpus to work properly.

Wim Sturkenboom 10-23-2009 01:24 AM

OK, which files are there in /boot/grub. It might be 'grub.conf' instead of 'menu.lst'. Can you post the output of ls -al /boot/grub (run from terminal) when you manage to get in.

Once again sorry I have not been able to follow up my question.
It seems it was a hardware error (HDD)
Tried with a new one and it works very well no.

Thank you all for the help

Wim Sturkenboom 10-30-2009 08:28 AM

Just curious

How did you find that out?

PS
If the issue is solved, can you please mark the thread as solved using the thread tools just above the first post.

fishsticksboy 10-31-2009 08:22 AM

I was told it sounded like a hardware problem and I got a free HDD,so tested it and now it starts up proper every time
