any suggestions on buying a used laptop?

Hey,

I really need a laptop, but I can't afford to get anything new. I've been thinking about getting something old to run gentoo on, but I'm not sure how old I can go. Of course, the cheaper the better, but I need to be realistic. I'll gladly run fluxbox, and other light tools on it. Compatibility is important of course, as I'll need ethernet, usb, and usable pcmcia slots.

Any suggestions on something that would be good for web browsing and development? I'll be developing small programs using a proprietary language and compiler (Dynamic C), and doing some web development and general administration (I'll need to be able to use openoffice and such).

If anybody can point out specific models that you think might work well, I'll search ebay!

Thanks!!
Justin

www.linux-laptop.net - lots of makes, lots of models, lots of information. Before you buy, read the entries there.

I'm using an older (reconditioned) Compaq Armada M700, mobile PII that works great with Linux driving it.
