ACPI Problems

Hi,

I'm running slackware 12, with the 2.6.21.5 kernel on a dell inspiron 9300.
I have all the acpi options compiled into the kernel.
When I go the power control menu in kde there is an acpi config tab which is supposed to let me enable and disable acpi options such as the availability of standy, hibernate, etc.
I check all the boxes because i want these options and hit apply, but it still says i need to enable acpi suspend/resume in order to enable some certain other options, like sleep on lid close etc.
when i try
Code:
echo mem > /sys/power/state
or
Code:
echo disk > /sys/power/state
i get
Code:
-bash: echo: write error: No such device
i've also been fiddleing around with this program without much luck http://en.opensuse.org/S2disk.

i really don't know where to get started on setting up acpi properly for my laptop, so thanks in advance for any help.

i tried the suspend2 patch but all it did was fuck up a bunch of times when trying to rebuild the kernel. i edited the source of a couple of files to make it continue, but it got out of hand and i'm not an experienced c coder.

You don't need patching your kernel. You don't need C codeing or modifying sources. You need enabling
CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU
CONFIG_SOFTWARE_SUSPEND
in your kernel. that's all. then try
Code:
echo mem > /sys/power/state
That should do a suspend-to-ram.
