Acer Wireless travelmate

I am trying to install a wireless driver in FC8 on a Acer Travelmate 283XC. The first problem I have had was trying to identify the wireless hardware.

Looking into the XP drivers i have found this

[Version]
NAME=Ambit 802.11b Driver
OS=WinNT
VERSION:2.1.0.0
LANG=WW

Does this tell me I have an "Ambit" wireless card. If so, what is the best route to driving it?

Ambit seems to be related to Atheros, so the madwifi driver should work, it can be found in the Livna repository for Fedora.

Yes, well first of all, I have had issues with mixing livna repos before so I would prefer not. Also I have plugged in a DLink dwl-650 which the network Manager applet sorted immediately.

Can I just get the ambit driver and stick it where network manager can find it?

At least I have good working wireless now.

Network manager has very little to do with the drivers or the connecting process, it is just a pretty face. The kernel handles the driver and the driver must be compiled to suit the current kernel. You could install Madwifi manually from the instructions at their site. Alternatively you can install ndiswrapper which will allow you to use the Windows 2000/XP driver, ndiswrapper is also in Livna though, but can be installed manually too.

ACer 283xc wireless working solved

The key to getting the internal card working was installing a card.

After that, the gui network manager worked.

Although back in the days of RH4 Iused to have to do stuff with kernel recompiling, since RH9 I have found linux RH/FCto be so mature that I do not have to do such stuff except as a learning exercise or out of sheer desperation.
