ACER linux compatibility

Have any of you had bad experiences with Acer laptops and linux?

I'm specifically wondering about the TravelMate 2423 and the Aspire 3004; I'm looking for my first Linux laptop and I'd like to make sure that whatever issues I end up dealing with are at least fixable. (FTR, I'm planning to install Ubuntu on them.) linux-on-laptops.com and the other usual suspects don't seem to have any (English) reviews.

Thanks!

I have a 2413 that works fine with Suse 10. I have also tried Mandriva, PCLinuxOS and Fedora, which also work fine.

I have an acer travelmate 2200, so far I have had Mandriva 2006, Fedora Core 4 & 5 and SuSE 9.2 & 10 and have had no problems. Everything seems to have been detected and installed, although I have wireless card which I haven't used yet since I have no access point to connect it too, so I'm not sure if it is working correctly.

I have Acer Travelmate 4202WLMi where everything seems to work fine. I'm planning on posting some installing instructions on linux-laptops at some point. I have gentoo on it at the moment but I'll return to slackware when 11.0 appears :)

Everything seem to work on it as far as I have tested it. Modem is still untested but should be working.

hi

i have an acer aspire 3003NLMi running Ubuntu 6.06... i used to run Mandriva 2006 on before... everything i could use worked well... by this i mean i never tried the modem, wireless card and card reader... since i never use them...

however i do have some problems the laptop... first it runs pretty hot... average cpu temp when cpu is scaled down to 800MHz from 1800MHz is around 55-60 degrees C.. and at full throttle with cpu usage at 100% i can go more than 90 degrees C... thats pretty scary so i hardly push it to the limits... and even then just for a few seconds.... i would research on this before getting an acer if i were you... maybe the Pentium M is better... mine is an AMD Sempron 3000+...

second... the air vents are all at the bottom of the machine... so it really isnt a laptop coz if u kept it on you lap you'd be blocking the air vents... assuming u can bear the burning hot underside of this machine while its on.. it has to be placed on a desk, table or other hard surface if you dont want to burn your fingers... yeah... the touch pad does get hot... and the keyboard as well...

third... battery life is pathetic... an hour max... enough said...

fourth... the phones jack is located on the front of the laptop... i'd rather have it on the side... but thats me... the cables to get in the way...

apart from these... its a brilliant machine... the screen is wonderful... for the price... and knowing what you're buying... (i cant expect to play UT2004 with a SiS onboard graphic card) its a good deal.. and i love my laptop... ;-)

I have Mandriva 2006 on my Aspire 9500. Some tweak is needed for booting with lilo (Dual Boot with Win XP). My display driver work fine but not at maximum of capacity (ATI X700). I do not test the modem and the Wireless. Also, the hot-key is not functionning (It's very annoying to use kmix for adjusting the volume).

does kmix not adjust your volume when you change the master volume??? i solved this by setting the default kmix volume control to change either PCM or PC Speaker volume... then you just have to scroll up or down over the kmix icon in the system tray to adjust the volume... i know its not an actual solution... its a way to avoid the problem... but it gets the job done... anyways... a problem like that shouldnt be there in a distro where you have to pay to get 'everything'... i have since switched to Ubuntu on my laptop... my server still runs Mandriva 2006... for now...

ps. to get maximum performance out of your graphics card try installing the driver / kernel modules from seerofsouls of plf... i dont remember... but google seerofsouls and easy urpmi... should sort you out ... i hope... or... change your distro!

I have an Acer Aspire 3003LCi with a Sempron 3000+, with it scaled back to 800MHz it rarely hits 50C, it normally stays below 45C. It has never gone far above 60C even under heavy compiling at 1800MHz, I think you may want to contact Acer. Are you sure your fan is working?

acer aspire 3003lmi here works great and with the latest kernel there is even native support for the wlan card. had the same heat 'problems' with Mandriva but it runs really cool with both slack and arch.

I have a Acer Aspire 5002WLMi Laptop. I have installed Redhat Enterprise Linux Work Station. The SiS900 network card is getting detected but I am not able to ping or connect to network. I tried from virtual console and it is giving errors like

irq3:nobody cared! (screaming interrupt?)

irq3: please try booting with acpi=off and report a bug

disabling irq #3

Also my sound card is geting detected wrongly, my sound card is Realtek Ac'97 and it showing SiS Sound card.
Also Wireless Lan is not working , it is not detected.

Where can i get these drivers, how should i install them?

Please help

con 06-28-2006 01:36 AM

for the sis900 card add pci=noacpi to your kernel line in /boot/grub/meny.lst, for the wlan card try ndiswrapper.sf.net

At my old work i had an Acer tablet PC running on debian.
