i'm trying to configure on my aspire 1802wsmi and i get some problems:
internal lan doesn't work
wireless lan(ndiswrapper) doesn't works
i've tryed an old pcmcia3com card (well detected by linux) and doesn't works
I tried suse 9.1 and 9.2 and mandrake 10.1 official
I have noticed that Linux just doesn't seem to work for Acer's, there is always some error coming up when you install something and it never quite works correctly, I am assuming this isn't a problem on PC's...
I recentely got an Acer Aspire 1802Wsmi and tried some distros last days.
-Mandrake 10.0 Offical. Almost everything works fine except the ATI mobility x600 which i was not able to load. Internal lan works fine. Touchpad , IRDA and bluetooth installed following some tips found on the web. Audio works with OSS
ACPI is not working but i'm planning to recompile kernel to let it work
-Mandrake 10.1 Comunity : everything was perfectly recognized during installation except again the x600. ALSA audio, WiFi and internal LAN recognized but experienced many freezes at start up...still no ACPI
- SuSE 9.1 ACPI works but no audio driver found. Also the ethernet didn't work after installation. Still no x600
finally i decided to hold Mandrake 10.0 official
Did anyone of you managed to install the x600 drivers? I downloaded the ATI proprietary drivers and installed it but when i start the X server the screen gets black. I suspect some issues with ACPI again....can anyone of you help me??
if not...someone managed to get 1440x900 resolution??? i'm still running 1024x768 but it's not really fine on this screen...
i get my linux works on it...
(immagino tu parli ancje ita ma ti risp. in eng.)
Try to disable hyper treading in the bios setting (no smtp)
I've used suse 9.2
device status
x600 radeon just 2d (no way to install ati drivers)
bluetooth seems to be ok (no tested yet)
lan ok
wlan ok (i used ndiswrapper)
touch pad +- ok (modified XF86 config just scroll up and down)
acpi ok
acer hot keys no :-)
fn keys just bright up and down
ubs ok
audio ok
fan allways on
I tried starting it with single processor kernel but i got the same issues..
when i try to start the X server it goes black
i looked at the XFree86.0.log and the server seems to loop on the following messages
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)
(II) Mouse1: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)
(II) Mouse1: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded
any idea?

Mat
Not sure if the 1805 is anything like the 1705 but with Mandrake 10 I had very few problems to get over.
One was to set acpi correctly in lilo.conf and a tiny bit of config for the mousepad (scrollers were opposed).
The 1705smi is basically a mini desktop, I'm really pleased with it - great games machine and upgradable with standard PC parts (hdd, RAM, PCI) it's (mandrake) linux compatability is superb.
I hope you get your problems solved Mat as I know how frustrating it can be sometimes.
i just arrive do install two kernel
they works both
one is default kernel
other one is smp kernel
the issue is under smp kernel wireless lan doesn't works
the config is ok
module ndiswrapper is loaded
i have wlan0
