2.6 kernel problem

I've tried using the 2.6.3, 2.6.5 and 2.6.8.1 kernels on my Acer Aspire 1310 laptop but with no luck. All have more or less the same problems.
- When booting up, screen goes blank for entire boot (after LILO) and only comes back for KDE login.
- No power to PCMCIA slots : my wireless adapter isn't seen at all.
- Sound doesn't work - I get an error complaining the /dev/dsp can't be found.
- System often hangs on shutdown.

This happened with the default Mandrake 2.6.3 kernel as well as the one's I've built myself. All 2.4 kernels run fine; but I want the extra speed and features 2.6 will give me. 2.6.3 is running fine on my desktop PC.

Here's the lilo.conf entry :
Code:
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8.1
        label=2681
        root=/dev/hda5
        read-only
        optional
        vga=788
        append=" devfs=mount resume=/dev/hda6 splash=silent apm=off acpi=on"
        initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.8.1.img
If any kind soul would care to take a look, my .config file is at http://www.cairnlin.co.uk/html/config.txt

Hopefully someone can spot some silly mistake I've made!

You have acpi and apm compiled in your kernel, from what i have read on the net the rule is to use only one at the time.
Try changing the kernel setting that they can be loaded as a module, in this case you can test diffent setup's by loading them by hand.

insmod acpi
insmod apm

one or both

I had a similar problem using grub and a 2.6 kernel. I sort of solved it by using bootsplash, and not compiling apm into the kernel...

hope it helps

I've tried excluding APM from the kernel compile. I had to remove the apm=no from the lilo stanza to get past LILO at all. Unfortunately, it made no difference apart from that - all the problems I had before remained exactly the same.

The blank screen thing is common. You have to enable some other options in the kernel.

Try this in your .config:

# Graphics support
#
CONFIG_FB=y
CONFIG_FB_VESA=y
CONFIG_VIDEO_SELECT=y
#
# Console display driver support
#
CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_DUMMY_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_PCI_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_FONT_8x8=y
CONFIG_FONT_8x16=y

#
# Logo configuration
#
CONFIG_LOGO=y
CONFIG_LOGO_LINUX_MONO=y
CONFIG_LOGO_LINUX_VGA16=y
CONFIG_LOGO_LINUX_CLUT224=y

With coindood's additions and not compiling in APM, it all seems to be working perfectly. I'm really not sure what has changed - beyond the additions above I didn't do much else different but all the problems : startup, shutdown, PCMCIA and sound seem to be OK now. Thanks.

Glad to see it works for you. I had the exact same problem with the blank screen when I first booted up 2.6.*.
