1920x1200 framebuffer supported ?

How high is framebuffer support ? I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 and want a higher resolution during bootup. I have it set at 1024x768 and it looks stretched. I tried vga=884 which is 1600x1200 and it did not even work. Currently the kernel is set at VESA FB support because i do not think Nvidia is supported in the kernel for FB.
