1280X800 Resolution on HPZv5000

Hello all I am in huge need of some assistance. I have an HPZv5000 laptop with an Nvidia Geforce 4 440 Go 64Meg video card. I can't seem to get the native resolution working which is 1280X800 with the nvidia drivers which support the accellerated 3D.. I have downloaded the latest Nvidia drivers with still no luck. After downloading and installling the new drivers I don't have the option of 1280X800 only 1024X768. I am running the Ubuntu 5.04 Hoary distro. I have tried to manually make some changes to the Xorg.conf file but have not had any luck and I am still somewhat of a newbie. Here is what my Xorg.conf file looks like right now.

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following commands:
#
# cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.custom
# sudo sh -c 'md5sum /etc/X11/xorg.conf >/var/lib/xfree86/xorg.conf.md5sum'
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

I've got the same laptop and tried to help out someone else. I'm not sure if they ever got it but here's the thread. I don't see what distro you're using but I'm on SuSE 9.2 now.

edit:
I see you're on Ubuntu. I did some reading this AM about lots of people having problems with NVidia and freeze ups. I'd take a look around the Ubuntu forum here and on their own Community page. You may need to disable acceleration. I forget the specifics though. I'm curious to hear how you make out. I tried the Live Ubuntu today and it was really fast and looked nice and clean.

Have already looked at the Ubuntu Forum

I appreciate the information but I have already looked at the Ubuntu forum. I haven't been able to find any help there. I have installed the Nvidia drivers but they don't let me change my screen resolution past 1024X768 and I have a WXGA Widescreen monitor on my HP.I would very much like to be able to use the Nvidia drivers cause I get a much crisper clearer picture.

The link in the post I made above should help you. The settings and info in there are how I got mine working. The reference I made to the Ubuntu forum was only if you had a problem with freeze ups once you got the NVidia setup and working.

The zv5000 is the the same laptop as the Compaq R3000z series and the HP Business Laptop nx9105. We on the R3000 Linux mailing list started a wiki that deals with most issues on these laptops, including video configuration. It may be of some help to you.

I use 1280x800 on my laptop, it's a centrino with intel graphics, but the modeline and display settings should be basically the same.

Here is my entire xorg.conf: (yes it's short)

Code:

Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier    "Layout"
        Screen      0  "Screen" 0 0

1280X800 Resolution on HPZv5000

macaldwell-
This part of your xorg.conf file indicates you're still using the open source nv driver, not the proprietary nvidia one you downloaded and installed.

Section "Device"
Identifier "NVIDIA Corporation NV17 [GeForce4 420 Mac 32M/GeForce 440 Go 64M]"
Driver "nv"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

If you have downloaded and installed the nvidia drivers, change the "nv" to "nvidia" and restart X.

If all is ok you should see the nvidia splashscreen before your desktop appears.
