[ask] need distro suggestions for a toshiba laptop
hi all, i have a toshiba satellite laptop with a core2duo intel processor..
i used to have ubuntu and windows 7 installed in it but now i'm thinking of switching to another distro as i feel that ubuntu seem to be a bit heavy and not quite suited for me (maybe it's the laptop that is slow but i dunno)
have anyone got a suggestion on a lightweight linux distro i could use?
my friend recommended Arch and Slackware but i want to ask for this forum's opinions first as i am still new to linux and really can't tell the differences between the distros.
all answers are appreciated, thank you..
How about Xubuntu? Found at http://www.xubuntu.org/. I know someone that uses that on a laptop, he seems happy...
It's especially engineered to run on low-spec machines.
Hola,
I am a fan of Mint 8. Similar to Ubuntu but faster, preconfigured with flash and video codex's. I have a dell 1545 with an Intel t4200 dual core. Your processor is faster and you should have no problem. I can use most of the gingerbread, bells and whistles without any noticeable slowdown. If you are familiar with Ubuntu, you won't have any trouble with Mint.
lrfocke
linusr@flanders : i'll have a look at it,
lrfocke : i just remembered i've used mint before switching to ubuntu, i can't remember why i switched but the new Mint looks promising i see..!
i guess browsing time is over, maybe now i'll look for the installer ISOs,
thanx guys
I have a Toshiba a205 satellite that I dual boot ubuntu with Salix (based off of Slackware, but a little easier to install). I've moved to Salix more and more over the last 2 weeks as it is just much quicker. I like Slackware on my desktops, but on my laptop Salix just seemed to fit better.
