'Freeing Unused Kernel Memory: 224k Freed - Laptop Hangs

Trying to install Ubuntu 5.0.4 (from a CD I know works) on a laptop. Unfortunately, when the installation environment is booting, it gets to:

Freeing unused kernel memory: 224k freed
Then it just stops doing anything - no HDD or CD activity what so ever .

I've Googled the problem, but it's turned up almost nothing of use.

Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

don't know if it's the same thing or not, but my old thinkpad 570e does this on a soft reboot. thought it was a mandrake thing (says 'kernel panic'), but it hangs with a different message with debian. try doing a hard boot.
