DVDR drive doesn't work

Hello
I've got a Zepto Znote 6625WD laptop. It's got the following DVDR drive:
http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/d...=SN-S082D/BEBN

I installed Debian Sid on the laptop. I can't seem to make the drive work. Modprobing ide related modules doesn't help. It doesn't show up in dmesg or anywhere else.
When I try to run a livecd, it shows in lshw as TSSTcorpCD/DVDW SN-S082D

Can anyone help me make it work?
Kernel version: 2.6.22-2-amd64

Go to the BIOS, disable it there and it will work just fine. It's bizarre and counter-intuitive I know. I have Mandriva on exactly the same laptop (which I'm typing on now) and went through all this.

BTW, you really should put the model name in your thread title, you're lucky I stumbled on this thread. If I'd seen Znote 6625WD in the title other owners are far more likely to have their attention drawn to it.

Happy with the computer otherwise? It's seriously rapid isn't it?

Also, this chap has a script solution for Ubuntu which might work for you as you're running Debian.

Ok, thanks - I'll try it first chance I get.
As for putting the model name in the topic: I'll keep that in mind until next time.
And yes, the laptop is very quick, but it has a few annoyances, the DVDr not working being one of them.
Other things that don't work:
The webcam
The hotkeys
The memory stick reader

Also, when gaming fullscreen, the framerate is rather low.

But thanks for the advice, dude.

Nice one! The DVD thing drove me nuts.

I'm trying to compile the webcam drivers from here:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/m560x-driver/

Hotkeys? You mean the P1, P2 etc? There is a way of getting those going. I'll try dig out a link.

The memory stick reader (I assume you mean the little slot on the side for SD cards) works just fine in Mandriva).

Sound was a real issue of me too. The suspend to RAM doesn't work properly either.

However, it's very fast, works well with an external monitor giving me two monitors, the build in screen is gorgeous and I didn't pay the odious Microsoft tax as I just saw it described!

The sound works fine after the latest ALSA release a few days ago. Prior to that I had to do a lot of grease monkey work with the ALSA sources to get it to work.

The memory card reader seems to detect my memory stick card, but doesn't automount it and I can't figure out how to mount them manually. Also, getting them out afterwards is difficult.

I just tried compiling a checkout of the webcam driver, it failed to compile.

Never tried suspend to ram, since I rarely need such functions.

The DVD drive itself. Find the tab where CD-ROM or DVD-ROM or something like that is, and change it so it is disabled. It might say "none".

I don't understand your question or what it has to do with the previous part of this thread!

Well...

I have the same problem (My Samsung DVD Writer is not visbile/ mounting/ working) but I cannot see how to disable the DVD/ CD in my BIOS - there doesn't appear to be any setting anywhere regarding CD/ DVD.

That's why I posted the BIOS version and my laptop model - it's actually an EeePC 701.

Is that clearer?

Thanks,

Ian

Yes, that's clearer, but the eeePCs don't have CDs or DVDs so you won't find anything in the BIOS!

This was a very specific problem for a specific laptop, you'd be best off posting a new thread with a title that's more likely to attract eeePC users.

I assume it's a USB device so it should just show up when you plug it in. The BIOS shouldn't have anything to do with it unless you're trying to boot from it when you'll need to enable booting from USB. (You might have to anyway.)
