Yum update stopped responding during kernel update install, now server load is high

This morning I ran "yum update" on my server to install the available updates to the machine (CentOS 5.2).

But after all the files were downloaded and the updates started installing, it got stocked in "Installing: kernel ####################### [22/43]".

After a while and no responding, I check my server load and it was over 10.00. So I decided to leave it a while more to let it finish, but it has been more than two hours now and is still stocked there. I can manage the server, I can run other window of SSH and run other commands (I stopped apache and mysql) and have been able to access files via SFTP. The only thing I cant access is an external USB Hard Drive mounted on /mnt/usb. I can change to that folder, but as soon as I type "ls" or try to view any of it contents, the open session stops working and I need to open a new session of SSH.

So I'm stuck, I dont know if reboot the server and see if it loads fine or what else to try. What if I reboot and the server cant start because of the failed update? What options do I have? Should I go ahead and reboot?

I'm linking the following text files:

The yum update output until it stopped working.
http://demos.nexellence.com/log_msgs/yum_update.txt

The top command output
http://demos.nexellence.com/log_msgs/top_command.txt

The netstat output
http://demos.nexellence.com/log_msgs...at_command.txt

The ps -ef command output
http://demos.nexellence.com/log_msgs/ps-ef_command.txt

To see if anyone finds what is going on and what could have caused this.

Thanks in advanced

The first link doesn't work for me, so I didn't check any more

Do you have physical access to the machine? If so, kill the yum process and try it again. If that works, then fine, otherwise, I'd reboot, and since yum keeps 3 kernels by default, you can try the latest, but if that doesn't work, select an earlier kernel.

If you don't have access , you can always set the /boot/grub/menu.lst to default to an earlier kernel and try yum update again.
