What is fbdev?

Hi
What is fbdev? I have enabled framebuffer support in my kernel and I got fb0 in /dev but not fbdev. Can someone please explain the difference between fb0 and fbdev ?

/dev/fb0 is your actual framebuffer device node whilst fbdev is the framework and drivers for communicating with the framebuffer.
