Want to compile kernel for a new platform. Where to start

Hi,

I want to compile kernel-2.6.29 to a hardware module that contains Intel Xscale IXP425 processor. The manufacturer of the board has given a customized kernel, but its based on kernel-2.6.13, and i want to port the latest kernel.

Can someone point me to the documents that can help me get started? I have the board manual and processor data sheets. but i do not know the hardware all that well.

Thanks in advance.

The big question in this case is which distro are you using? It would help if you added that to your profile. Let us know which distro and someone will point you to a how-to compile a kernel for it.

The machine is not big enough to run a distro. It just runs a kernel and a shell. No GUI.
