unresolved dependencies using Synaptic when trying to update kernal
I recently reinstalled my OS (PCLinuxOS) from the livecd, and am trying to reinstall the stuff Synaptic ripped out when it went crazy (for some still unresolved reason it removed basesystem and initscripts when I updated) and now all I can get are unresolvable dependencies. When I try to load any kernal listed in the available packages, I get:
The following packages have unresolved dependencies:kernel-2.6.22.15.tex3#1-1pclos2007:
Depends: hal (>=0.5.9) but 2:0.4.8-10tex is to be installed
Depends: kheaders-2.6.22.15.tex3 (>= 1)
I've tried to find other repositories, but those are the only two I seem able to connect to. I've also been trying to reinstall OpenOffice.org, but then I get a list of dependencies a mile long. Can someone give me a repo that actually has these things with all of their dependencies?
I've been using PCLinuxOS 2007 since it came out. I have never experienced anything like what you described. I can say that I recently changed my repository mirror from Indiana State to Georgia Tech. I've used Georgia Tech for a mirror with other distributions for many years. They seem to be very reliable.
I suspect that you did something to cause the problems. I recently upgraded my kernel in PCLinuxOS 2007 without any problems. You have to expect a certain amount of package upgrades when you upgrade the kernel but I've never seen Synaptic go crazy.
Without more information about your situation I would recommend reinstalling PCLinuxOS 2007 from scratch. Reformat the partition, don't do a repair. Then be careful about how you upgrade the kernel. It should be very simple. I had no problems when I did it. I just selected the new kernel and the new kernel headers, then clicked on the Apply button. Fifteen minutes later I booted into the new kernel.
It doesn't list kheaders in Synaptic. I can't install the kernal headers and I did just reinstall the os from the livecd. I just finished manually going through every upgradeable package (all 700+ of them) to see if perhaps one of them was some kind of missing file tool that was necessary to get them, or perhaps was the kheaders under a different name. I got some very strange results. When I try to upgrade, say, anacron, I get this:anacron:
Depends: libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.3.4)
and that particular dependency shows up a lot. I tried to download it and install using kpackage but nothing only got error messages. When I try to upgrade some others, say, audacity, it tries to remove a huge list of packages, including things like amule, drakconf, gaim, k9kopy, and that particular list shows up over and over again. Draxtools-newt, when I try to upgrade it, wants to remove basesystem, in addition to everything gnome related.
So, where can I download the kheaders files and libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.3.4), and how do I install them when synaptic and kpackage aren't working.
Forget Kpackage. Use Synaptic. Click on the search button and search for the word kernel. You will see kernels, kernel sources, and kernel headers are all available. If you don't see these things then edit your /etc/apt/sources.list file to change to a different software repository.

I had been using Synaptic, and I had searched for kernal AND looked in the System/Kernal and ... section. It wasn't finding the kheaders or any of the other unresolved dependencies, that's why I was using KPackage, because with KPackage, you can find something on the web, download, and drop it in an active window to try and install it. I tried formatting and reinstalling clean, and still had the same problem. That's when I realized that no, going from pclinuxos/2004 to 2007 was not simply a matter of getting the newer versions of a few things, it was more like going from Windows 98 to 2000. So I made the new livecd, installed from there, and am putting the finishing touches on my system as I type.
Distribution: ubuntu 6.06, Kanotix-Debian, and VISTA B2 too

PCLOS 2008 - same problem
...found same problem in 2008-2. can't find kheaders in synaptic.
tried to install european ISDN and kernel module dkms-fxusb. something is wrong with newer PCLOS issues - maybe itś easier to install ISDN in Ubuntu 8.04....
