Saving files in /etc
Does your user have write permission in /etc? Is there an error message that pops up that you may be missing? This is an obvious one but once you have saved the file, have you checked to see that it actually exists? I am sure you have, just have to ask. Sometimes the solution is obvious but we can't see the woods for the trees. Also, check to see how full the partition is that /etc is on. If it is full then that may be the cause. Unless /etc is mounted on it's own partition it will be on your / partition.
The only other thing I can think of is that something is clearing out files from /etc with particular properties. Perhaps a shutdown or even startup script?
Do you have the same problem in any sub-directories in /etc or even in other directories? Do other users have the same problem saving files in /etc? Have you tried it as root?
I hope this helps.
Your file can be saved only if you have the write permissions.
can you save it or not ?
Do u get any warning/error mesgs while trying to save the file ?
