Ubuntu starting problem

My PC does not starts. The last message on the screen is as following:
RUN – INIT:/SBIN/INIT: No such file or directory
[ 49.789227] Kernel panic – not syncing: Attempt to kill INIT!

Could anyone tell me what does it means and to solve it?

Many Thanks in advance
Similani

I did only those upgrades that are coming automatically. And I do not know if there was any kernel upgrade.
