System hangs at "Switching to new root"!!!!!!!!!

hi all,
I m using a 2.6.11.1 custom compiled kernel, and i m
using a 512MB compact flash(my root filesystem is on a partition of compact flash),
to boot an x86 based board.
I just need a login shell ( a prompt) with some basic commands n nothing else.
But when i start booting, the system hangs at line

"Switching to new root"

I m using grub as boot loader, and initrd created by mkinitrd command.

wot can be the problem???

ANY INPUT IS APPRECIATED!!!!

regards
rakesh
