System call not working

hi....
i updated a system call called abc() which will return the thread size and i compiled it and installed it.
After i installed i wrote a prog which will call abc() function but it is not returning the value.. but when i tried
printf("%d",((long int)syscall(333)); it worked..
Can any one say why it din't worked.. and say me the procedure how to call the function by its name.....
