Strange repeated kernel panic & crash
 

Hi All,
I am getting a repeated system crash.After a clean and good install my system runs for a few days or weeks and then goes down with the following error...

"Uncompressing Linux...
OK booting the kernel
CRC error
Kernel panic - not syncing VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (0,0)"

This system has heretofore run for years with no problems whatsoever but has suddenly started
this behaviour in the last few weeks,Thank the Gods I do good backups but I'm getting tired of
re-installing the whole thing which is the only way to get the kernel up again and the whole thing is freaking me out.

I seem to remember CRC error from way back as a hardware thing on old HDD's but this is a near new WD 80g ,could it be a disk problem ?

We saw one of our systems start to panic right after the recent updates for Daylight Saving Time (DST).

It turned out it was doing it because Oracle had misguidedly told people to upgraded their Java to 1.4.2-12 which was the first one that natively had the new DST rules. Our DBAs did this even though we had previously run the Sun provided tzupdater against our 1.4.2-x versions prior to 1.4.2-12 to add the new DST rules.

We found that any time we pointed to the 1.4.2-12 Java it caused the panic eventually but pointing it to the earlier version (1.4.2-02 I think it was) after running tzupdater against it did not cause the panic.

Not sure you have the same or similar issues but the "panic" in tandem with "last few weeks" caught my eye. If you're running Java 1.4.2-12 and just started doing so for DST perhaps it is the issue?
