By booting a CentOS installer in rescue mode or any Linux Live CD / DVD you can mount the file system and use 'passwd' to change the root password. However IMHO the best way would be to boot a CentOS CD / DVD in rescue mode, make an external backup of essential (human readable) configuration and /home and then do a fresh installation of CentOS-5.8 or 6.3. The main reason are integrity: it takes time and expertise to verify the system wrt backdoors and such, and efficiency: CentOS-4.4 is EOL as of 2012-02-29, meaning no bug and security fixes. And por favor solo hablar ingles.
