Most modules built into the kernel are for simple things like drive busses. These modules should not need firmware, so technically any other modules that are also loaded at this time should be able to wait for their firmware until the drive is mounted and firmware is available.

What is the idea of this statement? I know from personal experience the firmware will not be loaded if the module is built in and the firmware is not built in. Go visit Gentoo forums, this is common Gentoo rookie mistake to build the module in without firmware. There are tens of threads and they all end the same way: Thanks, I built the firmware in, it is working now.

Interesting either way, it seems like it'd be a good practice to put required firmware in the kernel if only so you know its there...on the other hands I guess updates would be a little annoying.

I'd say my issue is resolved at this point. Thanks for the help.
