Could you "pad" the question a bit, please? If you are new to Linux, (re)building a kernel may not be the best "entry vector", if you do need to rebuild a kernel, there may be some great howto's around (
this one is good, be it somewhat dated...)
What is your current situation, and where do you want to end up? What is your goal?
