RE-compiling kernel


can someone tell how to recompile the kernal in Linux, sorry new user.. also how can i get to the command line to type instructions... any help would be honored.

Which kernel platform 2.4 or 2.6 kernels?
Are you running under a gui and if so which one?

i think it is 2.6 and yes Im running under a gui,,, I do not know where to find the place to type any command lines to rebuild any kernel or issue any commands., sorry, new user

The place, i'm guessing, should be a terminal(bash, sh, someting similar). But first you need to get the kernel source, maybe your linux cd's or your distribution site, or kernel.org... but before all that why you need to recompile the kernel???, that is not a usual thing to do for most users specially if you are a newbie.
