Problem while booting kernel 2.6.17.8

I downloaded the source of the 2.6.17.8 kernel from kernel.org and compiled it. I did it in the follwoing steps.
1. make menuconfig (I didn't make any change here)
2. make bzImage
3. make modules
4. make modules_install
5. Copied the bzImage & System.map to the /bool folder as vmlinuz-2.6.17.8 and System.map-2.6.17.8 and created the initrd using the mkinitrd. Name of the file is initrd-2.6.17.8
6. Added the follwoing to the menu.lst of GRUB.
root (hd0,6)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17.8 root=/dev/sda7 vga=0x31a resume=/dev/sda8 splash=silent showopts
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.17.8
7. Now when I restart the machine using this new kernel I'm getting the following error.
FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.17.8-xen/modules.dep : File or directory not found
But when I check the corresponding directory the file is there

G3JACK:/var/log # ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.17.8-xen/
total 1232
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 2006-08-17 01:31 build -> /usr/src/linux-2.6.17.8

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 314948 2006-08-19 21:30 modules.usbmap
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 2006-08-19 21:30 source -> /usr/src/linux-2.6.17.8

Could someone please help me to get over this problem? Is there anything that I'm missing here.

OK I have now solved the problem. When I use mk_initrd the kernel gets booted successfully.
