Printing large file using 'lpr -P' command causes a "pause" before and during print.

We are running RHEL 2.6.18 with CUPS 1.3.7

Using the 'lpr -P' command, a large file takes several minutes (3-5) before it begins printing, in addition, during the print job, the printer will pause printing for up to 1 minute. I assume the job/printer is buffering the data stream. Is there a configuration setting that will begin printing immediately? The output is going to HP8000, HP1320, and CanonMF8350 printers. They all have the same issues, so I believe it to be a Linux/CUPS thing. Any advice, suggestions would be appreciated. I have an End-User calling me almost every day about it.

Kind Regards!

Hi, could it be that it's taking that time to filter the file so that it is formatted for the printer? If that is the case I don't know if there is anything you can do, it would be just processing time.

Thank you for responding 'elucches'. It is just a text file. So what might be happening is that CUPS is reformatting it for PostScript before it sends it to the printer? Ouch! If that is the case, we might have to do some reprogramming to solve this.

Would one solution be to create a queue in CUPS that is only for a 'text' printer?
