preemption vs preempt_rt as of 2.6.39

Dont know if this is the right subforum to ask on (please redirect me if not).....

Could someone explain to a mere mortal like me (an application programmer); As of kernel 2.6.39, with threaded irq's now included, what does the RT patch now buy me that's not in the mainline kernel?? It seems to me, that at this point a properly config'ed general kernel would be realtime preemptive enough to "control an industrial robot" (yes Im that kind of crazy) without the RT patch. Am I correct??
