Go to the directory where you have the source of the kernel, somewhere in /usr/src/, and do a bunzip2 to extract the file and then patch command to patch the files.
After the patching is done you would need to re-compile your kernel.
That's one reason why I just don't use "patches." I download a fresh new kernel-image, thereby trusting "wiser heads than mine" to have applied the patch correctly, on my behalf.
