Next major release of kernel?

Hello,

Does anyone happen to know approximately when is the next major (2.7 or 2.8) release of the kernel? Some information with regard to major differences between 2.6 and 2.Next would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks!

From Free Electrons' kernel and drivers training in Oct 07:

"Opening a new Linux 2.7 (or 2.9) development branch will be
required only when Linux 2.6 is no longer able to accommodate
key features without undergoing traumatic changes."

Free Electrons is a great source of material for course work!

It would be good to know the context of your question. 2.6.X has been a round quite a while and is quite mature. What would be the motivation for going to 2.7 or 2.8?

Good link, thank you. This bit is priceless:

"So we'll probably stay with that model unless something really radical happens, and that means that we'll keep with the "2.6.x" codebase, and just incrementally improve on it.

Of course, if we had a marketing department that had a strong say, they'd make us call it some sexy name ("Panther" or "Vista" or whatever)"
