Need help applying a touchpad patch and recompiling drivers

Hi, I have been following a bug thread that describes a problem with my touchpad. https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27442 I am using a Samsung SF310 laptop with Ubuntu 11.04 natty freshly installed. My problem is that the bug site contains a lot of terminology I am unfamiliar with and so I am at a loss with how to successfully apply the various patches to the kernel.

Specifically I do not understand what the psmouse module is or where to locate it in order to apply the patch. Any help you can give me on the specifics of applying the patch successfully would be much appreciated.

Dan

p.s I have looked for similar threads but have not been able to gain much understanding. I am a complete linux newbie :/

I applaud your fortitude, but I fear you are about to fall off a cliff.
I'm not surprised you couldn't find much to ease your confusion. Patching a "vanilla" kernel is straightforward and well documented. Ubuntu heavily modify the environment, and this accordingly makes your task significantly harder.
As the thread you pointed to states, the instructions on ubutuforums is merely to be read as general and adapted appropriately. I doubt you can make this judgement.
Try looking at this for Ubuntu kernel updating background. As for "what is a driver module ?" ... mmmmm, let me see what I can find online (after I walk the dog ).

The good news is, even if you royally cock it up, you should still be able to boot your old/current kernel, so it will be educational.
