make bzImage segfaults

When I try to compile a new kernel I get the following error after about 10 minutes:
Code:
  CC mm/shmem.o
mm/shmem.c: In function 'shmem_get_inode':
mm/shmem.c:1333: internal compiler error: Segmentation fault
Please submit a full bug report,
with preprocessed source if appropriate.
See <URL:http://gcc.gnu.org/bugs.html> for instructions.
make[1]: *** [mm/shmem.o] Error 1
make: *** [mm] Error 2
I have compiled kernels many times, and it always works flawless, but now I get this for some reason. Does anybody know how I can fix this?

running Archlinux (gcc 4.1.1, and kernel version 2.6.18.2)

It's an internal gcc error - you can't fix it unless you want to start swimming in some seriously esoteric code - so you can either regress gcc or play around with the config until you sidestep the problem.

I think shmem is part of a file system setup... try eliminating all the file formats / file system foramts you don't need in the config.

It seems from browsing other forums that my memory is dodgy... or that my heating is crappy. Everytime I try to compile, it segfaults in some other place. I'll try to compile after I give the comp. a good nights rest :P
