kernel recompile, no mouse cursor/pointer

slackware 11/2.6.20.4 testing system, dual slackware boot with slackware 11/2.4.33.3, main slackware system, both systems use the same hardware

serial mouse works fine in 2.4.33.3 cli/kde, gpm '/dev/mouse -t bare'

serial mouse works fine in 2.6.20.4 kde but not cli, same gpm, cat /dev/ttyS0 shows gibberish when i move/click mouse, messages says 'serial8250:ttyS0 at i/o 0x3f8 (irq=4) is a 16550a'

i compared configs between the two systems cant see what would make a difference

thanks for looking

Check that you have the following option selected (from "make menuconfig")
Code:
Symbol: MOUSE_SERIAL [=n]
Prompt: Serial mouse
   Defined at drivers/input/mouse/Kconfig:40
   Depends on: INPUT && INPUT_MOUSE
      Location:
       -> Device Drivers
         -> Input device support
           -> Generic input layer (needed for keyboard, mouse, ...) (INPUT [=y])
             -> Mouse (INPUT_MOUSE [=y])
Selects: SERIO
This is under Drvice Drivers -> Input device support -> Device Drivers -> Mouse

The 2.6.20 kernel is not just a better 2.4. If your distro has a way to do an upgrade to 2.6, use it. It might be easier to just install the latest slackware.

Slackware has 2.6.18.8 binaries/sources/modules/etc.. in it's -current (aka unstable) repository, but it seems pretty solid, just don't upgrade the X server to 7.2R3 and related packages.

make menuconfig/device drivers/input device support,[*] mouse --->, <*> serial mouse

.config
# Input Device Drivers
CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSE=y
CONFIG_MOUSE_SERIAL=y

is this what you mean GamerX?

nevermind

using mouseconfig selected '/dev/ttyS0 (com1: under DOS)', then mouseconfig asks to run gpm using /dev/mouse

changed /dev/mouse to /dev/ttyS0 in rc.gpm, since cat /dev/ttyS0 showed data

cli mouse cursor/pointer works now, maybe i should better attention?

thanks everyone
