Kernel panick for 2.6 with grub boot loader

I have compiled the kernel and had have done all the necessary things for the kernel to load ( copying of vmzlinuz and modules_install )

When I am trying to load the new kernel with grub boot loader, I get the following error:

mount : error 19 mounting ext3

pivotroot: pivot_root ( /sysroot,/sysroot/initrd ) failed:2

umount /initrd/proc failed:2

Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init=option to Kernel

Can anyone help me ?? ( I can load the prev kenel 2.4.20 version succesfully )

It would help if you would post your menu.lst.

grub.conf

Ok I'm copying the contents of my grub.conf file.....
---------------------------------------------------------------------
# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.
# root (hd0,6)
# kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/hda8
# initrd /initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/hda
default=1
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,6)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Red Hat Linux (2.6.1)
root (hd0,6)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.1 ro root=LABEL=/ hdc=ide-scsi
initrd /initrd-2.6.1.img

title Red Hat Linux (2.4.20-8)
root (hd0,6)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-8 ro root=LABEL=/ hdc=ide-scsi
initrd /initrd-2.4.20-8.img

title DOS
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Now can u give any suggestion ?

grub looks ok to me.
Is initrd-2.6.1.img actually present? (To rule out the most obvious)
I had a similar problem some time back. I tried commenting out the line containing the reference to the new initrd and upon rebooting it worked.

problem is still there

The new initrd file for 2.6 kernel is present.

But the problem is not solved by commenting that line. On the contrary, more errors are given by omitting that line
