Kernel Panic - Not Syncing VFS: unable to mount root file system

Hello friends,

I've tried to compile linux kernel using "make menuconfig" than make,
and I created initrd using "mkinitrd"
While doing boot, I've got this message :

Kernel Panic - Not Syncing VFS: unable to mount root file system

What can I do for solving this ?

I want to boot from Compact flash that connected to IDE Port,
The compact flash is empty and I only copy the bzImage and initrd..

Any help is very usefull for me,
Thanks

Hi -

Getting the Linux source (you didn't specify *which* source, or your host system), running "make menuconfig" and "mkinitrd" are all very good starts.

But there are other things you need to do (including, of course, partition and format your root disk!), so we're not sure what necessary steps you have or haven't done.

Please find a good "Linux kernel build how-to", and see if you've missed anything.

Please post back with any specific questions or problems. For that matter, please post back if everything worked OK!

Here are a couple of good examples:

'Hope that helps .. PSM

I have read and follow the

http://www.digitalhermit.com/linux/K...ild-HOWTO.html

I'm using the /usr/src/linux at suse 10.1
I got bzImage and try to boot from it...
and still get :

I have formatted my compact flash already to xt3 and installed GRUB on it...

Kernel Panic - Not Syncing VFS: unable to mount root file system

What should I change on "make menuconfig" ?
Or is there any other way ?

What do I miss ?
