Kernel Compilation & gcc dependencies

I have gcc-4.2.3 installed and I want to compile linux-2.6.9 kernel.
But the readme says to use gcc version 2.95.3, So I installed that particular version.

When I do make bzImage the following is the error

<command-line>: warning: "__GNUC__" redefined
<built-in>: warning: this is the location of the previous definition
<command-line>: warning: "__GNUC_MINOR__" redefined
<built-in>: warning: this is the location of the previous definition
<command-line>: warning: "system" re-asserted
<command-line>: warning: "cpu" re-asserted
<command-line>: warning: "machine" re-asserted
cpp: -lang-c: linker input file unused because linking not done
<command-line>: warning: "__GNUC__" redefined
<built-in>: warning: this is the location of the previous definition

<command-line>: warning: "machine" re-asserted
cpp: -lang-c: linker input file unused because linking not done
CHK include/linux/version.h
CC scripts/mod/empty.o
cpp: scripts/mod/.empty.o.d: No such file or directory
cpp: warning: '-x c' after last input file has no effect
make[2]: *** [scripts/mod/empty.o] Error 1
make[1]: *** [scripts/mod] Error 2
make: *** [scripts] Error 2

Any idea?

Thanks,
Venkat
