Question kernel & modules always compile from beginning, without make clean

hello,
i'm wondering why the kernel (2.6.33) and it's modules always compile again from the beginning, even though everything was already compiled several times. i just made small changes, like unchecking or adding a module.
any ideas?

my command line is:
Code:
make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install && cp arch/x86/boot/bzImage
 /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.33-phc-laz && cp System.map /boot/System.map-2.6.33-phc-laz &
& cp .config /boot/config-2.6.33-phc-laz
no "make clean" of course...

i'm using xubuntu, GNU Make 3.8.1, gcc 4.4.1

i didn't compile the linux kernel for a while, because it wasn't necessary. but now i want to compile a custom kernel for my xbmc-box, with a patch, that enables undervolting.

Don't do the make modules - unnecessary with 2.6

thank you. but still the same. like make doesn't have the information, that most of all is already compiled.

Given that everything, module-based or otherwise, is tightly connected and any error causes "we all fall down," I frankly would not worry at all about "unnecessary" compiles.
